Frequently Asked Questions

Who can enter?

The competition is open to anyone in school years 10-13. You must have a connection to the Diocese of Guildford too - live here, worship here, study here or similar. The diocese is most of Surrey (from Dorking westwards) and the Eastern Slice of Hampshire (Aldershot, Farnborough, Fleet). Our Diocesan website shows you in more detail.
The competition is open to all, regardless of faith, but we do expect all preachers to be able to demonstrate engagement with both modern issues and the chosen Biblical text. (details of text on the 'how to enter' tab).

When is it?

Your entry into the first round must be with us by 12 noon on 11th January. We are shortlisting that week and will be in touch within 10 days to let you know if you are going to be invited to our preach off on 10th February. Entrants must also be available on 10th February (when we are holding the preach-off) and 3rd March (when one preacher will be invited to deliver the sermon in a Cathedral service).

Where is it?

Both the Preach-off on 10th February and the winning sermon will be delivered at Guildford Cathedral.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, of course. The final round will be held in the Lady Chapel at the cathedral. Successful preachers from the first round will be allowed to bring up to 3 people with them to the preach off. The entrant invited to deliver the sermon in the main Cathedral nave on 3rd March can invite as many as will fit in the Cathedral. The Cathedral can seat over 1000. Please don't bring more than that.

How much does it cost to enter?

It is totally free. We are unable to cover your expenses, but the entry in to the competition is free, and your invited guests will be able to join us at the reception too.

What about accessibility?

The Cathedral is not a step free building, sadly. However if you need help accessing our building, ramps are available. If you have any other accessibility needs to enable you to deliver your sermon, please do get in touch. We want this competition to be open to as many people as possible. We are able to accept BSL sermons (by video for round 1), and if you intend to use BSL in the final please be in touch so we can discuss interpretation for your sermon.

Still got questions?

Then please get in touch. We've probably missed something obvious. If your question is good enough we might even put it on this page!
